The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSIn Word, when you compile a table of contents or an index, some of the page numbers are not correct.
CAUSEYour document may have manual page breaks that are formatted as hidden text. Word does not include hidden text when it repaginates the document. This means that the page numbers in your table of contents will be off if one or more of the manual page breaks in your document are formatted as hidden text. (Word will not recognize the manual page breaks when the table of contents or index is created.) NOTE: When you set up a table of contents or index, it is easy to accidentally format manual page breaks as hidden text.
RESOLUTIONTo avoid this problem reformat all manual page breaks. To do this, use the procedure appropriate for you version of Word.
Word Versions 6.x and LaterFollow these steps:
Word 5.0 and 5.1Follow these steps:
NOTE: This procedure also replaces section breaks.
Word 3.x and 4.0
NOTE: This procedure replaces all page breaks and section breaks with the contents of the Clipboard, which in this case is a page break that is not formatted as hidden text.
MORE INFORMATIONUnintentional hidden text formatting usually occurs when a manual page break is entered directly before or after an index entry (.i.) or table of contents entry (.c.) because the page break is retaining the hidden format given to the .i. or .c. entry.
