Finding Links to Document Templates in Word for Windows

The following information details how to determine what template is attached to a Microsoft Word for Windows document.

To find the name and location of the template attached to a document, follow a procedure below:

Procedure for Word for Windows version 6.0

  • From the File menu choose Templates. The attached template is listed below Document Template. To attach another template, choose Attach and select another template from the list box of files.

Procedure for Word for Windows version 2.x
  • From the File menu, choose Template. The attached template is listed below "Attach Document To:". To attach another template, choose a template name from the list box of templates.

Procedure for Word for Windows version 1.x

  1. From the Format menu, choose Document.

  2. If the Template box is blank, a global or normal template is being used. If another template is being used, it displays in the Template box.

  3. The first template listed is the linked template to the active document.

Alternative Procedure for Word for Windows versions 1.x, 2.x and 6.0

   1. From the File menu (Edit menu in version 1.x), choose Summary Info.

   2. Choose the Statistics button in the Summary Info dialog box.

   3. The third line of the Statistics dialog box is labeled Template.
      The template name displays on this line. It contains the full
      path of the drive and directory in which it resides.
