WD: Bold Formatting in Monospaced Fonts Changes MacWord Indents

Last reviewed: November 17, 1997

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When using a monospace font in Word, such as Courier or Monaco, and printing to a LaserWriter, bold text can throw off printed spacing when the line is indented using spaces. The line indents no matter where on the line a bold character occurs. However, the screen display looks correct.

For example, if the first line is indented five spaces and the second line is indented five spaces, but the second line includes at least one bold- formatted character anywhere in the line (not necessarily the first character of the line), the second line prints farther indented to the right than the first line.

CAUSE

This problem is related to fractional widths.

RESOLUTION

To solve this problem in Word 6.0, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Print tab, and click to select the Fractional Widths check box.

In Word 4.0 and 5.x, click Page Setup on the File menu, and click to select the Fractional Widths check box.
