SUMMARY

In Word version 4.0, to alternate between a foreign dictionary and the MS dictionary, you must change the default main dictionary. Word can only work with one main dictionary at a time, and that main dictionary can either be the MS dictionary or a foreign dictionary. To quickly change the default dictionary, launch Word by double-clicking the desired dictionary's icon in the Finder.

If the default dictionary is one of the foreign dictionaries, the program will open it automatically when you choose Spelling from the Utilities menu. If the default dictionary has been moved, Word brings up the alert, "Please Locate xxx," where "xxx" is the last dictionary used, whether the MS Dictionary is present or not.

An alternate method of changing the dictionary is as follows:

  1. At the Finder level, move the default dictionary (the MS Dictionary or the foreign dictionary, as appropriate) to a different location.

  2. Start Word and choose Spelling from the Utilities menu. The program will prompt you to locate the last dictionary used. At this point, you can locate an alternative dictionary and select it. This will then be set as the new default dictionary.
