WD: Vertical Tabs Contain Gaps When Using a Paragraph Border

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, if you set a vertical line tab outside a paragraph indent and use paragraph borders, gaps may appear in the vertical line. This behavior can also be observed in the following situations:

  • When multiple paragraphs have a vertical line tab in the same place.
  • When you apply a thick bottom paragraph border in one or more paragraphs, a space in the vertical line tab occurs where the border, if extended, would intersect the line.
  • When you format a paragraph with a plain, shadow, or custom box, or a thick or thin line, a space in the vertical line tab occurs outside the paragraph indent, between the bordered paragraph and the following paragraph without a border.
  • When you click Paragraph on the Format menu, and then select Space Before Paragraph, a space in the vertical line tab occurs in paragraphs following the first one.

WORKAROUND

To format a document with a border surrounding the text, you can use a table with four columns and borders instead. Borders on the outside of each column and box borders on the second and third columns produce a document that resembles a document formatted with paragraph borders and vertical tabs.
