  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

If your WIN.INI file is flagged read-only and you make a Windows system configuration change from within Word for Windows (for example, changing the printer in the Printer Setup dialog box), Word will not warn you that the change cannot be saved to the WIN.INI file.

WORKAROUND

The read-only attribute must be removed from the WIN.INI file to enable changes to be saved. To remove the read-only attribute from the WIN.INI file, open File Manager, and select the WIN.INI file. From the File menu, choose Change Attributes, and clear the Read-Only option in the dialog box.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. From the Windows version 3.0 File Manager, change the attributes of your WIN.INI file to read-only.
2. Restart Windows 2. Start Word for Windows. 3. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup, and select a different
printer from the list. Choose the OK button.
4. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup again. You should notice
that the original printer is still active; the change made in step
3 was not retained. Word for Windows did not issue a warning that
the change could not be saved to the WIN.INI file.

In Word for Windows version 2.0, when attempting to change a WIN.INI setting by choosing Tools Options category WIN.INI, the following error will occur if the WIN.INI file is Read Only:

The setting could not be created
