SUMMARY

In Word 2.0 for Windows, the Numbered List option (available by choosing the Bullets And Numbering command from the Tools menu) does not list a maximum/minimum value at which to start numbering paragraphs. The minimum/maximum value should be between 0 (zero) and 65534.

NOTE: Word 6.0 for Windows allows for values between 0 and 32767. If you enter in a value larger than allowed, Word gives you the following error message:

Start At must be between 0 and 32767 for this format

MORE INFORMATION

In Word 2.0, you can number paragraphs in a document by choosing the Bullets And Numbering command from the Tools menu and selecting the Numbered List option. The Start At option does not indicate the limit for the value entered. If the number exceeds 65535, no error message appears, but the numbering starts over at 0. For example, if you enter 65545, Word changes the entry to 9.

NOTE: Entering the number 65535 results in the following error message:

The number in the Start At box is not valid.

Word does not indicate a valid number to use. If you enter any number above 65535, the numbering restarts at 0. Word automatically enters the number into the document.

NOTE: Entering a negative value in the Start At option results in a negative numbering scheme, such as, -1, -2, -3 initially; however, Word interprets the negative sign as a new separator value and changes the numbering to 1-, 2-, 3- if you choose Bullets and Numbering from the Tools menu a second time.
