SUMMARY

When you run Microsoft Word for the Macintosh with System 7.0 or later, you can create a header or footer with a "Page <page number> of <page count>" entry.

This functionality has changed in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh.

MORE INFORMATION

Method 1

NOTE: This procedure does not work unless you are running Word with System 7.0 or later.

To create this type of page numbering, use the following steps:

  1. Press the COMMAND+END or COMMAND+Keypad 3 key combination to place the insertion point at the very end of the document.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Glossary.

  3. Select the page number glossary entry.

  4. Click the Insert button.

  5. Select the glossary entry you entered.

  6. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

  7. On the Format menu, click Character.

  8. Select the Hidden Text check box, and click the OK button.

  9. On the View menu, click Header or Footer.

  10. Type "Page " (without the quotation marks). Notice that a space follows the word.

  11. Click the page number icon (the left-most icon).

  12. Type " of ". Note the spaces on both sides of the word "of."

  13. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.

  14. On the Paste list, click Picture.

  15. Click the Paste Link button.

Method 2

This procedure places a page number at the end of the document and formats it as hidden. When you use the Copy and Paste Special commands to bring a graphic into the header, it creates a link to that page number.

NOTE: With this procedure, the page number is updated only when the document is open AND the document is in normal view. If pages are added, the number in the header will not be updated until the document is closed and reopened in normal view.

The following is a second method to update the number in the page number in the header:

  1. Select the page number in the header.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Link Options.

  3. Select the Manually option and click Update.

  4. If necessary, click the Automatically button to establish automatic updating of other links in the document.
