SUMMARY

When saving a file in Microsoft Word for Windows you can protect your document with a password. With this feature, you can restrict other users from opening your document unless they enter the correct password.

MORE INFORMATION

To assign a password to a document, choose Save As from the File menu and choose Options (File Sharing in Word version 2.x). A password can be specified in the Protection Password dialog.

In Word version 2.x the space allotted for passwords is large; however, passwords are limited to 16 characters. After you reach the 16-character limit, the program begins to beep and does not allow you to enter additional characters. The dialog in Word version 6.0 is limited to 15 characters.
