WinWord: Match Whole Word Only Option Doesn't Reset Properly

• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for Windows, the Match Whole Word Only option (available when using Edit Find or Edit Replace) does not reset itself properly if the search criterion begins with a space or a caret.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. We are researching this problem, and will post more information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, select and then clear the Match Whole Word Only option to reset the dialog box.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. From the File menu, choose New, and choose the OK button. Type "This is a searching test in Word for Windows 2.0" (without the quotation marks).

2. From the Edit menu, choose either Find or Replace.

3. Select the Match Whole Word Only option, and type "^0097" (without the quotation marks) in the Find What box. Note: ^0097 is the ANSI code for lowercase letter "a."

4. Choose the Find Next button repeatedly. Only one letter "a" can be found using the Match Whole Word Only option.

5. Choose the Cancel button.

6. From the Edit menu, choose either Find or Replace.
