SUMMARY

When inserting data from a Microsoft Excel worksheet into Microsoft Word for Windows, the formula may display rather than the desired numeric result.

MORE INFORMATION

In Excel, you can display the formulas in a worksheet rather than the results of the formulas. It is often useful to have two windows of a worksheet open: one displaying the formulas and one displaying the results. If you copy and paste a value into Word for Windows while the worksheet or the first window of the worksheet is displaying the formulas, the formula is pasted into Word.

Workaround

To correct this problem, you must turn off the display of formulas in the first window of the spreadsheet using the following steps:

  1. From the Window menu in Excel, choose Unhide (if available) to open any hidden windows.

  2. From the Options menu, choose Display. Verify that the Formulas option is not selected.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open a worksheet containing formulas in Excel.

  2. From the Window menu, choose New Window. This opens a second window of the same file, with ":2" (without the quotation marks) following the filename.

  3. Position the cursor in the first window of the worksheet. From the Options menu, choose Display.

  4. Select the Formulas option box, and choose the OK button.

  5. From the Window menu, choose the second window of the worksheet, which is displaying the numeric values.

  6. Select one of the numeric values. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

  7. Switch to Word for Windows. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.

The pasted result is the formula rather than the numeric result of the formula that you copied from Excel.
