WinWord: How to Find the Distribution List File for MEMO2.DOT

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word for Windows version 2.x contains a template called MEMO2.DOT. This template allows you to create a distribution list of commonly used names and addresses. The distribution list data is stored in a file called MEMO2.INI, which is located in the same directory as the MEMO2.DOT template. Under certain circumstances, however, the location and name of the distribution list file may be different than expected.

The MEMO2.DOT template uses the following algorithm to calculate the name of the distribution list file:

  1. Find the full path for the template file. This is usually something like "C:\WINWORD\MEMO2.DOT" if the template is stored in the Word for Windows program directory.

  2. Find the location of the first period in the template name.

  3. Remove everything after the period and add "INI" in its place. This usually results in a name like "C:\WINWORD\MEMO2.INI."

A problem occurs if the template directory name contains an extension, such as "C:\WINWORD2.0\MEMO2.DOT." In this case, the algorithm finds the period in the directory name, removes everything after it, and adds "INI" to create the filename "C:\WINWORD2.INI." The distribution list data is then saved in a file called WINWORD2.INI in the root directory.

Note: This problem does not occur in Word for Windows version 1.x.
