SUMMARYIn versions 5.0 and 5.1 of Word, straight apostrophes and quotation marks can easily be changed to curly apostrophes and quotation marks (sometimes called "smart quotes"). To change straight apostrophes and quotation marks to curly apostrophes and quotation marks, do the following:

If the Smart Quotes check box is selected, Word determines whether a straight apostrophe or quotation mark should be replaced with an opening or closing smart apostrophe or quotation mark based on the placement of leading and following spaces in relation to the quotation mark. *
