SUMMARY
In Microsoft Word for Windows, if you try to save a document in which
you have made a large number of changes, the following error message
may be displayed:
Not enough memory to complete operation.
The error message will then suggest that you close extra windows. The
document will not be saved.
This article describes three methods you can use to save and restore
text in Word for Windows.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-
CD, and 2.0b of Word for Windows.
Method One: Save to the Clipboard
- Select all the text in the document.
- From the Edit menu, choose Copy to copy the text to the Clipboard
in Microsoft Windows.
- From the File menu, choose Exit. When prompted to save the
Clipboard contents, choose the Yes button.
- Restart Word for Windows.
- From the File menu, choose New. Select a template in the Use
Template box, and choose the OK button.
- From the Edit menu, choose Paste to paste the saved contents of the
Clipboard into the new Word for Windows document.
- From the File menu, choose Save.
Method Two: Save the File in Windows Write
- Select all the text in the document.
- From the Edit menu, choose Copy to copy the text to the Clipboard
in Microsoft Windows.
- From the File menu, choose Exit. When prompted to save the
Clipboard contents, choose the Yes button.
- Start Microsoft Windows Write by choosing the Write icon in the
Accessories group.
- From the Edit menu, choose Paste to paste the saved contents of the
Clipboard into the Windows Write document. The document appears as
an embedded Word object icon.
- Double-click the Word object icon. This launches Word for Windows
and opens the document.
- From the File menu, choose Save As. Type a new name in the File
Name box, then choose the OK button. This step saves the document in
the normal Word for Windows file format.
Method Three: Launch Second Instance of Word for Windows
This method works if SHARE.EXE is installed on your computer.
- Select all the text in the document.
- From the Edit menu, choose Copy to copy the text to the Clipboard
in Microsoft Windows.
- Start a second instance of Word for Windows.
- From the Edit menu, choose Paste to paste the saved contents of the
Clipboard into the new Word for Windows document.
- From the File menu, choose Save.
The advantage of this method is that you retain all Word for Windows
formatting that may be lost if you save the document in Windows Write.
A second advantage is that you can recover two or more documents using
this method, whereas you can only recover one document using the first
two methods.
