  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for Windows, the overstrike formula fails if a period (.) is selected as the list separator in the International section of the Windows Control Panel. The overstrike formula uses a comma (,) as default separator between text and the overstrike mark. When the list separator is changed to a period in the Windows Control Panel, the overstrike formula finds no separator in the text string and therefore cannot produce the overstrike.

For example, if the list separator set to a period, the field {EQ \o (n,~)} is displayed as "n,~" instead of the letter "n" with the tilde character above it.

WORKAROUND

  • Substitute periods for commas as separators in the overstrike formula. In the above example, change {EQ \o (n,~)} to {EQ \o (n.~)}.

    -or-

  • Change the List Separator setting to a comma with the following steps:

    1. From the Control menu, choose Run.

    2. Select the Control Panel option button, then choose the OK button.

    3. Double-click the International icon.

    4. In the List Separator box, type a comma.

    5. Choose the OK button.

    6. From the Settings menu, choose Exit.

The list separator does not affect numbers; therefore, if you use the international style to delimit monetary amounts, numbers are displayed as typed. A symbol is interpreted as a list separator only when found in print merge data files and formulas.
