SUMMARYIf you run the Installer program for Word for the Macintosh, you may receive a system error message or your computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSEWord 5.1 uses the Apple Installer Script to automate installation. Hanging during installation of the Equation Editor fonts may be due to a conflict between the Installer Script and a corrupt Embedding Preferences file or MT Extra font. Additionally, the Apple Installer Script is not compatible with Virtual Memory.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Word version 5.1 for the Macintosh. (This problem does not exist in Word 6.0 because Setup for Word 6.0 does not use the Apple Installer Script.)
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use either of the following methods before you attempt to reinstall Word. Method 1:
a. Drag the Embedding Preferences file to the Trash. This file is located in the Preferences Folder (System 7) or in the System Folder (System 6). b. Drag the MT Extra fonts to the Trash. These fonts are located in the System Folder (System 6 or 7) or in the Fonts Folder (System 7.1). c. Under Control Panels, open the Memory control panel and turn Virtual Memory off. Restart the Macintosh for this setting to take effect. (In addition, on a Power Macintosh turn off Modern Memory Manager). d. Remove any Virus Protection software from your System Folder. e. Restart the computer with extensions off. On System 7 this is done by holding the SHIFT key down while restarting the computer. f. Allocate more memory to the Installer. To do this, click once on the Installer icon in the Install disk, and choose Get Info from the File menu. Increase the Preferred Size (Current) to 1300K. Increase the Minimum Size to 1300K.Method 2: If the above steps do not resolve the problem, perform a custom installation without the System Resources. a. Run the Installer on the Install Disk. b. Choose OK then choose Continue to get to the Easy Install screen. c. Choose Customize. d. Select Complete Installation--No Sys. Resources. e. Choose Install. f. Continue with the prompts to successfully complete the installation.Method 3: Change the number of visible screen colors
a. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels. b. Select Monitors in the Control Panels window. c. Select an option that provides fewer colors. Do not select the Millions Of Colors option. |
