WD:Can't Change Facing Pages or Mirror Margins Option by Section

Last reviewed: November 17, 1997
Article ID: Q96787
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you are working in a document with multiple sections in Word, selecting the Mirror Margins option (the Facing Pages option in Word 2.x) for one section of the document turns on Mirror Margins or Facing Pages in all sections of the document. It is not possible to turn the option on or off for just one section of a document.

(To locate the Mirror Margins option in Word 6.x, 7.x, and 97, click Page Setup on the File menu, and click the Margins tab. To locate the Facing Pages option in Word 2.x, click Page Setup on the Format menu. In Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, click Document Layout on the File menu, and click the Margins tab.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the product versions listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0.

The documentation and the Page Setup and Margins dialog boxes imply that it should be possible to turn Facing Pages or Mirror Margins on in one section and off in another.

NOTE: Versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a of Word for Windows have the same behavior with the equivalent feature, Mirror Margins. However, this feature is available by clicking Document on the Format menu, which indicates that the option is applied to the entire document.
