  • Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SUMMARY

This article describes a method you can use to simulate draft output when you print on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet series printer, without changing the fonts in your Word for Windows document. This method changes the printer driver settings so your document prints using printer-resident fonts. The advantage of this method is faster printing speed.

When you use this method, you do not need to format your document for a printer-resident font (such as Courier) to print quickly in a draft- output manner. Although your document remains formatted with the font listed on the ribbon, the screen display and the printed output change (see the "Notes" section below).

MORE INFORMATION

This method applies to the following printer drivers:

   Printer Driver Version(s)
   -------------- ----------

   HPDSKJET.DRV (Microsoft driver) 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.1

   DESKJETC.DRV (HP driver) 3.0

To simulate the draft output printing mode on an HP DeskJet printer, do the following:

Using a Microsoft Printer Driver

  1. From the File Menu, choose Print Setup.

  2. Select the HP DeskJet, if not already selected, and then choose the Setup button.

  3. Change the Resolution setting from 300 dpi to 75 dpi.

  4. Choose the Options button.

  5. In the Print Quality box, select Draft.

  6. Choose OK three times to return to the document.

  7. Print the document.

Using an HP Printer Driver

  1. From the File Menu, choose Print Setup.

  2. Select the HP DeskJet, if not already selected, and then choose the Setup button.

  3. In the Print Mode box, select Black/Grayscale.

  4. In the Print Quality box, select Draft.

  5. Choose OK twice to return to the document.

  6. Print the document.

Notes

When you print the document using either printer driver, the fonts change to an internal printer font, such as CG Times, Courier, or Univers. The following are the limitations of this method:

  1. If the document is formatted for a point size less than 12, the document prints in a 6-point font.

  2. If the document is formatted for a point size greater than 12, the document prints in a 12-point font.

Examples:

   Document Font Printed Font
   ------------- ------------

Arial 10 point Courier 6 point

Times New Roman 14 point CG Times 12 point

Times New Roman 12 point CG Times 12 point
