WD: MacWord 4.0 Font Names Convert to Numbers in Word 6.0

Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q123054
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows, version 97

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word 4.0 for the Macintosh document in Word for Windows version 6.0 and later, or Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, font names appear in as "Fontxxxx" where "xxxx" is a number. For example, Arial from a Word 4.0 for the Macintosh document might appear in Word 6.0 as:

   Font2001

CAUSE

Word 4.0 for the Macintosh retain fonts based on their Macintosh Font ID numbers. The Font ID for the same font may differ on different Macintosh systems. For example, Chicago may be font 3 on one Macintosh system and font 16 on another. This may occur because the Macintosh system changes a font's ID number if another font already uses that number.

Therefore, the following behavior occurs when you open a Word 4.0 for the Macintosh document into Word versions 6.0 and later:

  • Word for Windows version 6.0 and later always replaces font names with "Fontxxxx" when opening Word 4.x documents because there is no way for Word to know what actual source font coincides with a particular Macintosh font number.
  • Word 6.0 for the Macintosh replaces font names with "Fontxxxx" when opening Word 4.x files originating from a different Macintosh because, as in the first scenario above, Word 6.0 has no way of knowing what actual source font is represented by the font number it sees in the 4.x file.
  • Word 6.0 for the Macintosh should be able to retain font names when opening Word 4.x for the Macintosh documents created on the same Macintosh on which Word 6.0 itself is installed. However, Word 6.0 instead displays "Fontxxxx."

RESOLUTION

To replace text formatted in "fontxxxx" with the actual font name, following conversion, use the Replace command in Word. To replace the incorrect font name with the proper font name, follow these steps:

  1. Determine the appropriate font to replace each of the incorrect font numbers.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Replace.

  3. In Word 97 only, if the Format button is not displayed click More.

  4. Place the cursor in the Find What box.

  5. Click the Format drop down menu and then click Font.

  6. Once the Font dialog box appears, type the incorrect font (for example, "Font2001" [without the quotation marks]) in the font name box, making sure it is spelled identically to the way it appears in the Font drop-down menu.

  7. Click OK. The incorrect font name should appear below the Find What box.

  8. Place the cursor in the Replace With box.

  9. Click the Format drop down menu and click Font.

  10. Select the font you want to replace the incorrect font and then click OK.

  11. Click Replace All.

  12. Repeat steps 2-11 for each font that is incorrect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0.1 for the Macintosh.
