SUMMARY

This article describes how to disable the automatic running of CD-ROMs or the automatic playing of audio CDs in Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

To disable both the automatic running of CD-ROMs and the automatic playing of audio CDs, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click System.

  2. Click the Device Manager tab.

  3. Double-click the CD-ROM branch, and then double-click the CD-ROM driver entry.

  4. On the Settings tab, click the "Auto Insert Notification" check box to clear it.

  5. Click OK or Close until you return to Control Panel. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

To disable only the automatic playing of audio CDs, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click My Computer.

  2. On the View menu, click Options.

  3. On the File Types tab, click AudioCD in the Registered File Types box, and then click Edit.

  4. In the Actions box, click Play, and then click Set Default.

  5. Click Close, and then click Close.

How CD-ROMs Are Run Automatically

Windows 95 polls repeatedly to detect if a CD-ROM has been installed. When a CD-ROM is detected, the volume is checked for an Autorun.inf file. If the volume contains an Autorun.inf file, programs listed on the "open=" line in the file are run.

If the volume is an audio CD, Windows 95 performs the default action (if any) for the AudioCD file type. "Play" is the default action for the AudioCD file type until you follow the steps above.
