Video Display Problem after Installing Program

SYMPTOMS

After you run the Setup for one of the programs listed at the top of this article, you may experience some of the following behaviors.

NOTE: These symptoms can occur if your video driver is not DirectX compatible.

  • Your computer may stop responding (hang) during the reboot, or it may reboot into Safe Mode.

    -or-

  • When you restart the computer, Windows 95 starts in 16-color VGA mode.

    -or-

  • When you restart the computer, the Windows 95 logo appears and then the screen goes blank.

    -or-

  • After the computer reboots, you have a black screen or strange horizontal lines running across your display. The system stops responding (hangs) and does not respond to your keyboard or mouse.

CAUSE

This can occur if:

  • Your video card driver is not DirectX compatible.

    -or-

  • Your video resolution was set to 1024x768 High Color (16 bit) before running Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, follow the instructions, below. If you can start Windows, skip to Step 2.

  1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode. To do this, do the following:

    a. Restart the computer.

    b. Press the F5 keyboard key when 'Starting Windows '95...'

          appears on the screen.
    

  2. Switch the display adapter to VGA. To do this, do the following:

    a. In Windows, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click

          Control Panel.
    

    b. Double-click Display.

    c. Click the Settings tab.

    d. Click the Change Display Type.

    e. Click Change to change the Adapter Type.

    f. Select Show All Devices.

    g. For manufacturer, select Standard Display Types.

    h. For model, select VGA.

    i. Click OK twice, and then click Yes to restart Windows.

  3. Switch the display adapter to your original video display. To change the adapter, do the following:

    a. After the computer restarts, Click the Start button, point to

          Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    

    b. Double-click Display.

    c. Click the Settings tab.

    d. Click Change Display Type.

    e. Click Change to change the Adapter Type.

    f. Select Show All Devices.

    g. Select the manufacturer of your video card.

          NOTE: If you don't know what video card you have, contact the place
          where you purchased your computer.
    

    h. From the list of models, select the appropriate driver.

    i. Click OK twice, and click Yes to restart Windows.

  4. Obtain latest DirectX-compatible video driver for your card.

MORE INFORMATION

Updated DirectX-compatible drivers may be available for your video card. These can be obtained from your video card manufacturer.
