While you can install DSMN on any Windows NT domain server, the service runs only on PDCs. The server on which you are installing DSMN must:
Be running Windows NT Server version 4.0 or version 3.51. If the computer runs Windows NT Server 3.51, it must also run Windows NT Server Service Pack 2 or later. Only instructions for installing on Windows NT Server 4.0 are included in this supplement. For details about installing on Windows NT Server 3.51, see Chapter 1, "Understanding and Installing Directory Service Manager for NetWare," in the Microsoft Directory Service Manager for NetWare Administrator's Guide for Windows NT Server 3.51.
Have Gateway Service for NetWare installed. This service is included with Windows NT Server. For installation instructions, see the Windows NT Server Networking Guide, Chapter 5, "Network Services: Enterprise Level."
Note
You may want to install DSMN on one or more backup domain controllers to speed up recovery in the event of a failure of the PDC.
Instructions in this section include those for:
Installing DSMN from a CD-ROM.
Creating disks from the CD-ROM and installing DSMN from those disks.
Installing only the DSMN administrative tools, which can be used to remotely run DSMN on any domain server on the network.
