Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
A naming convention that uniquely identifies the location of a computer, directory, or file on the Internet. The URL also specifies the appropriate Internet protocol, such as HTTP, FTP, IRC, or Gopher.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
A battery-operated power supply connected to a computer to keep the system running during a power failure.

User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
A TCP complement that offers a connectionless datagram service that guarantees neither delivery nor correct sequencing of delivered packets (much like IP). See also packet.
UUENCODE (UNIX-to-UNIX Encode)
A utility that converts a binary file (such as a word-processing file or a program) to text so that it can be transmitted over a network. UUDECODE (UNIX-to-UNIX Decode) is the utility used to convert the file back to its original state.
