VSS Explorer displays important status information, such as your current working folder, search criteria, number of files, and so on. Some of this information is shown in file pane column headings, and other information is shown in the status bar at the bottom of the VSS Explorer window. The title bar of VSS Explorer shows the database you are connected to. VSS Explorer uses symbols to provide information about the files and projects.
When you start Microsoft VSS, it first prompts you for your password, if you have set a password. If you have not set a password, you see VSS Explorer. From the Explorer window, you can navigate the VSS database, view your project list, examine file statistics, and execute commands that act on projects and files.
The project pane shows the project list, and includes information on special projects, like those you have designated Web site projects, cloaked projects, or the currently open project. The file pane shows the file list, which is a list of all files in the current project. The results pane displays the results from VSS operations. For example, when you check in a file, this pane shows the file name being checked in.
Just below the menu bar, the toolbar in VSS Explorer provides command buttons so you can quickly access the most common VSS commands.
At the bottom of the default VSS Explorer is the Results pane. This pane shows the results of your current VSS operation. As with other Explorer panes, you can resize this pane. You can also eliminate it entirely by clearing the Show results pane check box on the View tab in the Options command on the Tools menu.
