The logical layer in a distributed system between a user interface or Web client and the database. This is typically where business objects are instantiated. The middle tier is a collection of business rules and functions that generate and operate upon receiving information. They accomplish this through business rules, which can change frequently, and are thus encapsulated into components that are physically separate from the application logic itself.
