Granting Permission for Working with Agents

Because public folders are considered a public resource, control over them is placed in the hands of a Microsoft Exchange Server administrator. Because an Event Service agent monitors a public folder and has the power to delete, route, or change documents posted there, the rights to create an agent are also controlled by an administrator.

The administrator must grant Owner permission to you so that you can author and run scripts in the monitored folder. If you created the folder yourself, your permissions are sufficient, and you can skip this procedure. If you are not the folder owner, a Microsoft Exchange Server administrator must perform these steps for you.

To grant Owner permissions on the application folder

  1. Using the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program, in the Public Folders container under Folders, click the LitCrit folder.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click Client Permissions on the General tab.
  3. Click Add, and then select the user (or account name) who will have Owner permissions on this folder.
  4. In the Roles dialog box, select Owner. Click OK.

While installing Microsoft Exchange Server (version 5.5 or later), the administrator also installs the Microsoft Exchange Event Service. After the Event Service is installed, it runs automatically as a Microsoft Windows NTŪ service when you start Microsoft Exchange Server. During installation, a folder called EventConfig_<ServerName> is created in the information store. This folder holds information about the Event Service. Administrators determine who can install scripts to run on any particular server by granting them Author permission on the EventConfig_<ServerName> folder.

To grant permissions for installing scripts

  1. Using the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program, in the Events Root container under Folders\Systems Folders, select the EventConfig_<Server Name> folder that corresponds to the server on which the Microsoft Exchange Event Service is running.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click Client Permissions on the General tab.
  3. Click Add, and then select the user (or account name) who will have permission to run agents on this server.
  4. In the Roles dialog box, select Author or another role with greater permissions (Owner). If you have Author permissions on this folder, you can edit agents that you have previously created but you can only view agents that others have created.
