Hardware Configuration Details

This series of tests was run on an isolated network consisting of a single BackOffice Server 4.5 server with three client workstations providing the workloads. Because the network infrastructure was not under test, a high-capacity 100-MB/sec Ethernet switch was used to avoid the possibility that the network infrastructure would present an unintended bottleneck. (Network bandwidth usage remained in the low range of 2% to 5%.) The test scenario included SQL Server 7.0 and Internet Information Server 4.0.

The primary test computer (on which the server elements of the PT application ran) was a dual-processor Compaq Proliant 1600 Server computer. Application performance was tested on operating systems in the Windows family: one test used Windows NT 4.0 SP4 and the other used Windows 2000 Server. The operating system and its components were the only software difference between the two test environments.
