Microsoft Mail Connector Services

When the Microsoft Mail Connector is installed, four new resources are added to the Microsoft Exchange Server cluster group:

All the new resources except the maildat$ file share remain offline after the initial configuration. While in this state, use the following procedures to ensure proper operation of the Microsoft Mail Connector in a Microsoft Exchange Server cluster. Be sure to note the service name that you are using.

To configure the Microsoft Mail Connector on a clustered server

  1. In the Cluster Administrator program, bring the Microsoft Mail Interchange (MSMI) resource online.
  2. In the Administrator program, configure the Microsoft Mail Connector as usual.
  3. In the Cluster Administrator program, create a new generic service cluster resource for Microsoft Mail (PC) message transfer agent (PCMTA):
    • Name the new resource after the PCMTA service created during connector configuration in the Administrator program.
    • In the Resource Dependencies tab, make the service dependent on the MSMI resource and network name.
    • In the PCMTA Resource Parameters tab, type the service name of the Windows NT PCMTA service, and select Use Network Name for computer name.
    • In the Registry Replication tab, choose Add and type the following path:

      SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\service name

  4. In the Cluster Administrator program, start the PCMTA.
  5. Update the second Microsoft Exchange Server cluster node by running Microsoft Exchange Server Setup and choosing Update Node.

To remove an instance of a PCMTA

  1. In the Cluster Administrator program, shut down the PCMTA service.
  2. In the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program, remove the PCMTA service.
  3. In the Cluster Administrator program, remove the resource.

After the Microsoft Mail Connector is configured, you can configure the Microsoft Schedule+ Free/Busy Connector and the Directory Synchronization service. After you have configured these services in the Administrator program, complete the following procedure.

To configure Microsoft Schedule+ Free/Busy Connector

  1. In the Cluster Administrator program, select the Microsoft Schedule+ Free/Busy Connector.
  2. Choose Properties, and then select the Advanced tab.
  3. Choose Restart, and then select Affect the Group.
  4. Choose OK.

Repeat this procedure for the Directory Synchronization service.

Now you can bring the resources online. This ensures that the services restart as expected when the node fails over to the other computer.
