Restoring Data After a Catastrophe
If a server is catastrophically destroyed, the data must be restored from a backup. For procedures, see Chapter 12, "Disaster Recovery." In addition, note the following:

You cannot restore the directory to a computer in a different Windows NT domain. Make sure you add the restored machine to the original Windows NT domain.

If the Microsoft Exchange Server you are restoring is a primary domain controller, as can be the case in small remote sites, the security ID on the restored server must match the security ID of the original server. If the security IDs do not match, you cannot access the information store until you restore only the information store and then manually rebuild the Windows NT accounts.
