Using Log Files

The directory and information store services use the following logs and files:

Microsoft Exchange Server maintains several database files. The information store consists of two databases ¾ the private information store (Priv.edb) and public information store (Pub.edb). The Microsoft Exchange Server directory is stored in the Dir.edb file.

Microsoft Exchange Server services use transaction log files for each database. Microsoft Exchange Server implements the log files to accept, track, and maintain data. To optimize performance and recoverability, all message transactions are written immediately to log files and to memory, and then to their respective database files. Transaction records are written to the log files sequentially and are always appended to the end of the file. However, transaction records are distributed across the database files rather than written sequentially.
