Procedure C
The procedures below describe how to move Microsoft Exchange Server to a new computer that has the same hardware platform and same name as the original computer. For purposes of this example, the two computers are referred to as Server A and Server B, even though both computers have the same network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) computer name.
To back up information from Server A
-
Start the Administrator program on Server A. Make note of the organization and site names.
-
On Server A, stop all Microsoft Exchange Server services.
-
Copy the entire Exchsrvr directory to another computer on the network, or to a tape drive. If the Microsoft Exchange Server log and database directories are on different drives, use Performance Optimizer or the Administrator program to move all of the directories to their corresponding locations under the Exchsrvr directory where Microsoft Exchange Server was installed. This should be done before you back up the Exchsrvr directory.
-
If the KM server is installed, stop the KM server service and back up the Security directory. Back up the KM server service Startup disk as well.
-
Make sure that there is an operational domain controller in the Windows NT domain, and then shut down Server A.
Use the following procedure to install Windows NT and Microsoft Exchange Server on Server B. Before you install Windows NT on Server B.
To install Windows NT and Microsoft Exchanger Server
-
Turn off Server A.
-
Install Windows NT and service packs on Server B with the same computer name as Server A. If necessary, make it a backup domain controller.
-
On Server B, at the command prompt, type Setup to install Microsoft Exchange Server.
-
Create a new site using the same organization and site names that were used on Server A. Install all of the connectors that were installed on Server A. To do so, select the Custom installation option. Install Microsoft Exchange Server service packs as necessary.
-
During setup, when you are prompted for the Microsoft Exchange Server service account, select the same service account that you used for Server A because if a new service account is selected, the new service account will not have permissions on the directory.
-
Do not run Performance Optimizer at the end of the Setup program.
-
Make sure that no Microsoft Exchange Server services are running.
To re-create data on Server B
-
From the backup copy of the Exchsrvr directory on Server A, copy all of the files to the Exchsrvr directory on Server B.
Caution If Server A and Server B have the same name but do not have the same hardware platform, do not copy the contents of the entire Exchsrvr directory to Server B. Doing so destroys the executable files. For more information on how to re-create data on a new server that does not have the same hardware platform, see "Procedure A."
-
Start the Microsoft Exchange Server system attendant and directory services.
-
At the Windows NT command prompt, type the following to run the ISINTEG troubleshooting utility:
ISINTEG -patch
See the Chapter 11, "Troubleshooting," and Chapter 12, "Disaster Recovery," for discussions of the ISINTEG tool.
-
Start the information store service.
-
In the Administrator window, select Server B.
-
From the File menu, choose Properties.
-
Select the Advanced tab. Choose Consistency Adjuster, select All Inconsistencies, and then choose OK.
To install the KM server (where this is applicable)
Note The following steps are applicable only if you already have the KM server running on Server A and security is enabled for the Microsoft Exchange mailboxes on Server A.
Server B must be set up as a Cert Server client to the same Cert Server to which Server A was a client.
-
Stop the KM server service on Server A. This is very important because it closes all transactions with the KM server database, making everything consistent.
-
Back up the Kmsdata directory on Server A by copying all .edb files in the directory to a safe place, such as tape or a network drive.
-
Uninstall KM server from Server A by running Microsoft Exchange Server Setup.exe, choosing Add/Remove at the prompt, and then deselecting KM server.
-
Install KM server on Server B by running Microsoft Exchange Server Setup.exe, choosing Add/Remove, and then selecting KM server. Choose the same location for the KM server password that was used on Server A. Make sure that you do not write over your original password.
-
Delete all files in the Kms directory on Server B. The .log and .chk files will be recreated after you start the KM server service.
-
Copy all the .edb files you backed up in step 2 to the Kmsdata directory on Server B.
-
On Server B, start the KM server service with the original password from Server A. Complete the next steps if either version 2 or version 3 was installed on Server A.
-
Install Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 1.
-
Open the Certificate Administrator object and select Enrollment property page.
-
Change to the option that was set on Server A (version 2 or version 3).
-
Enter the name of the same Microsoft Certificate Server that was used on Server A, and then follow any prompts.
