Languages Supported for SMS Site Servers and Clients
This section provides current language support information for each of the seven SMS server language packages and lists the client languages supported by each of these packages.
Language Support Definitions
The terms localization and enabled are used throughout this chapter. The following definitions of these terms explain the difference between a localized interface and one that is enabled:
- Localization
- Localization to a language means that the correct character set is used to display the language, and all user interface elements are translated into the target language. When all SMS user interfaces, dialog boxes, and messages to the user are translated into the supported language, and SMS supports the display of the language using the correct character set, fonts, and regional settings for a target language, SMS is said to be fully localized in regard to the target language. As mentioned earlier, SMS 2.0 provides fully localized client user interfaces in 24 languages and fully localized server user interfaces in seven languages.
- Enabled
- When a server is enabled, it can display data from a localized client, but the server user interface is not translated to the target language. For example, the Korean-language version of SMS is enabled to display and process Korean characters, but because it is not localized, the user interface is in English and not Korean. The English-language SMS server and client versions run on, and are supported on, any localized operating system. The localized versions of SMS servers and clients are supported only on their matching localized operating systems.
Language Support for Servers and Clients
Table 3.1 lists the seven languages supported by SMS 2.0 site servers. The first column lists the languages into which SMS servers are localized. The second column lists the corresponding client languages supported by each of the server language packages. Any site server language version listed in the table can be the child site or the parent site of any other listed localized server.
Table 3.1 SMS 2.0 Server and Client Language Support
Site server language | Supported client languages |
---|
English | English and the 23 other client languages listed in Table 3.2 |
French | French |
German | German, English |
Japanese | Japanese, English |
Korean | Korean, English |
Simplified Chinese | Simplified Chinese, English |
Traditional Chinese | Traditional Chinese, English |
Note As with the Korean-language server user interface, the Simplified and Traditional Chinese server user interfaces are enabled for, but not localized to, their respective languages, while their client user interfaces are fully localized. Therefore, the SMS Administrator console and other user interface elements in these packages will appear in English, but can display data in each of their local languages.
SMS 2.0 clients are localized in the 24 languages shown in Table 3.2. An English-language site server supports all these client languages.
