Microsoft® Systems Management Server (SMS) version 1.2 includes Program Group Control (PGC), an SMS feature where a user starts and runs an application from a client computer, but the application executes from files located on a server. In addition, in SMS 1.2, PGC also manages access to the network servers containing the application source files.
SMS 2.0 does not provide the same PGC functionality. However, by combining standard SMS 2.0 software distribution features with the ability to create packages for shared applications, SMS 2.0 provides a level of support comparable to SMS 1.2.
This chapter describes the options available to you when you migrate SMS 1.2 PGC applications to SMS 2.0. The concepts explained in this chapter can also help you to install new SMS 2.0 shared applications. This chapter includes the following sections:
To gain the most benefit from this chapter, you should have a basic knowledge of SMS and of SMS software distribution, as well as an understanding of SMS 1.2 PGC. For more information about PGC, see the SMS 1.2 documentation. For information about software distribution, see Chapter 12, “Distributing Software,” in the SMS 2.0 Administrator’s Guide.
