When your package has been distributed to the distribution points, the next step is to advertise the programs to your clients. You only need to advertise the client installation scripts.
In order to advertise the programs, you need to set up a collection of clients. If you target user groups for both collections and package access accounts for the client programs, you provide a convenient single point of control, and you provide automatic synchronization of who receives and accesses advertised programs. As users are added to user groups, the changes are automatically reflected in the collection, and newly added users will receive the advertisement and can access the package via package access accounts. As users are removed from user groups, the advertisements are automatically revoked, access to the package on distribution points is removed, and if the advertised programs are configured with removal support, the application will be removed from clients.
In order to populate collections based on users and user groups, user and user group discovery must be enabled for the desired domains under Site Settings in the SMS Administrator console. The discovery process runs at specified intervals, so changes to the actual user or user group accounts will not be reflected within the SMS Administrator console until the next discovery interval. Increasing the frequency of discovery increases the load produced on your network and SMS site systems, so be sure that you understand and configure the options to balance the response and performance needs of your organization. For more information see Chapter 9, “Discovering Resources and Installing Clients,” and Chapter 4, “Planning for Systems Management Server in Your Organization,” in the SMS 2.0 Administrator’s Guide.
