Client Installation

To install an SMS client, use one of the client installation methods. Thirty minutes after installation, SMS performs hardware inventory on the client and stores the inventory data in the SMS site database. For more information on client installation, see Chapter 9, “Discovering Resources and Installing Clients” in the SMS 2.0 Administrator’s Guide.

You can force an immediate client installation using SMSman.exe.

Procedure Bullet  To run manual client installation through SMSman.exe, do the following.

  1. On the target client, open Windows Explorer and navigate to Network Neighborhood.
  2. Find your primary site server’s workstation name (for example, H50_RC_PRIME).
  3. Connect to the SMSLOGON share directory for your site.
  4. Navigate to the …\x86.bin\00000409 directory.
  5. Run the SMSman program to start installing the client-side components.
  6. Wait for all of the client-side components to install.

If you have enabled Remote Control for the site and if client installation of the SMS components has been completed, Remote Tools will be installed on each client in the enterprise as each client’s Client Component Installation Manager (CCIM) cycle checks for new offers from the distribution point.

Because the installation of Remote Control is silent, you can use either Wintop (for Windows 95 clients) or Task Manager (for Windows NT clients) to verify when the Remctrl.exe package runs. If you are using Task Manager or another process viewer, you will notice that the Remctrl.exe file appears in the process list. This process will run for 30 to 60 seconds. When it is finished, Remote Control has been installed on the client.
