Running Remote.exe from the Command Line

Although the MMC-based SMS Administrator console serves as a front end for the Remote Tools functions, all remote tools are available directly from the Remote.exe program. This program resides in the SMS\Bin\I386 directory.

The command-line options for Remote.exe are:

REMOTE <Address_Type> <Address> [\\<Site Server Name>\]

where:

• Address_type is 1 for IPX, 2 for TCP/IP, 3 for LM or NetBIOS. (A value of 0 introduces a special case described below.)
• Address is a valid IPX, TCP/IP or NetBIOS name or address.

Examples:

C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 1 00002425:FD3423ACC:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 2 170.90.40.6C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 2 DUGS_NT50C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 3 DUGS_NETBIOS

• Site Server Name takes the form \\Server_Name\, as in this example:

  C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 2 170.90.40.6 \\BIG_SERVER\ 

  The server name must be preceded by two back-slashes, and followed by one back-slash.

To identify a client by its resource ID, use the following command:

REMOTE 0 <Resource_ID> [\\<Site Server Name>\]

where:

• 0 (zero) is a required parameter to attempt all protocols.
• Resource_ID is the SQL-assigned resource ID of the client computer. To determine this number, in the SMS Administrator console, right-click a client resource, and then click Properties. The Resource ID field for the client appears in the Properties dialog box.

Example:

C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 0 5

• Site Server Name is the site server name of the site to which the client belongs.

Example:

C:\SMS\BIN\I386> REMOTE 0 5 \\Alpha\ 

Do not neglect the leading and following backslashes.

If no command-line options are used, a user-friendly interface appears. You can use this interface to set the following parameters:

Address type

The type of address you are about to specify to identify the client (NetBIOS Name, IP address, or IPX network number).

Name of the client

Any valid NetBIOS, IP, or IPX name, address, or network number (for example, 170.90.40.6, “WRKS45”, 00002425:A4DC5622).

When you have set these parameters, click OK to connect to the client.

A connection to the client will be established if the following conditions are met:

• Wuser32 (or Wuser for Win16 clients) is running on the client computer.
• The server and client share a common protocol, and this is the same protocol that the Remote Tools Agent is listening on.
• MMC security is satisfied for your logged-in user ID and the resource ID can be reconciled as a valid client in the SQL Server database. The command-line option does not allow you to circumvent MMC security.

After a connection to the client is established, you can click any of the available toolbar buttons in the SMS Remote Tools console to execute Remote Control functions on the client.
