The Midwest Development Center has approximately 200 small testing laboratories that report to its SMS 1.2 site server. Each testing laboratory is running SMS 1.2 on its local site server.
The system administrators chose the main site server and three of the testing laboratories (Ann Arbor, Cleveland, and Bloomington) as the locations for their initial site server and client upgrades. Figure 12.2 shows the hierarchy of the SMS 1.2 site servers, the domains assigned to these site servers, and the client operating systems in use.

Table 12.9 lists the site server types, domains, and client operating systems in use at Wide World Importers’ Midwest Development Center.

Before the Midwest Development Center’s administrators can upgrade the site servers, they need to determine their post-upgrade hierarchy. The administrators need to map their SMS 1.2 client domains to the IP subnets or IPX network numbers that will be used by SMS 2.0 to define site boundaries. They must also maintain at least one SMS 1.2 site server in the hierarchy because two of their sites include Macintosh clients. (Macintosh clients are not directly supported by SMS 2.0.)
Figure 12.3 shows the hierarchy that the Midwest Development Center administrators decided to deploy as they upgrade to SMS 2.0.
Figure 12.3 Wide World Importers Midwest Development Center after upgrade
In the new Midwest Development Center hierarchy, each of two of the site servers that support Macintosh clients will be replaced by an SMS 2.0 site server and an SMS 1.2 site server. The Macintosh clients will report to the SMS 1.2 site server and the Windows clients will report to the SMS 2.0 site server. The administrators made this decision to reduce WAN traffic between the MDC and AA_Test site servers.
The remaining site servers and the primary site server will be upgraded to SMS 2.0. Table 12.10 shows the new site servers, their SMS versions, and the site server to which they each report.
