Discovery and Installation Methods

The SMS administrators at the Midwest Development Center reviewed the client mix at each facility to determine the discovery and installation methods to use at each site server. After initiating these methods, SMS will complete the client upgrades as described in “Architecture-Specific Client Upgrade Processes” earlier in this chapter.

MDC (Midwest Development Center, primary site)
At this site server, the administrators chose to use Network Discovery and Windows NT Remote Client Installation for their Windows NT clients because they do not want to modify the logon scripts. They will also use Windows Networking Logon Client Discovery and Windows Networking Logon Client Installation for their Windows 95 and Windows 98 clients, and configure those methods to modify logon scripts.
AA_Test (Ann Arbor Testing Facility, child primary site to MDC)
At this site server, the administrators chose to use Windows Networking Logon Discovery and Windows Networking Logon Client Installation with logon script modification for all client types.
BL_Test (Bloomington Test Facility, child secondary site to MDC)
Because the clients at this site server are all on a Novell NetWare bindery system, the administrators chose to use the NetWare Bindery Logon Discovery and NetWare Bindery Client Installation methods. These methods modify logon scripts.
CL_Test (Cleveland Test Facility, child secondary site to MDC)
This site server at this site is a very small site server that does not use logon scripts, so the administrators chose to use the Network Discovery and Windows Networking Logon Client Installation methods.
