Configure Client Desktop Tool (SetStart.exe)

Use the Configure Client Desktop tool to configure program shortcuts on a client desktop. You can add shortcuts to the client’s Start menu or place them directly on the desktop. You can also use this tool to remove shortcuts from a client desktop or Start menu. For more information about using the Configure Client Desktop tool, see Chapter 5, “Migrating and Creating SMS 2.0 Shared Applications.”

Installing Configure Client Desktop

You can install the Configure Client Desktop tool by running the Microsoft BackOffice 4.5 Resource Kit Setup program or by copying the required files to the desired location.

Configure Client Desktop Syntax

setstart [/?] [/s] [/name] [/exe] [/group] [/key] [/icon] [/common] [/dir] [/args]

/?
Displays Help and terminates Setstart.exe.
/s
Runs the script silently.
/name
The friendly name of the shortcut.
/exe
The executable file name of the program.
/group
The location where the shortcut is placed: desktop or start (Start menu).
/key
The unique uninstall key to be used with Add/Remove Programs.
/icon
The icon file to use on the client desktop.
/common
Creates a shortcut that is common to all user profiles.
/dir
The default directory to be used — the path to the executable file on the client.
/args
Any parameters to be passed into the shortcut’s command line.

Using Configure Client Desktop

When specifying command-line options, you must specify /s as the first parameter (if used) and /args as the last parameter (if used).

The Configure Client Desktop tool can be sent to clients as the second of a two-package series in which the first package installs files and performs other work requiring administrator rights.
