Hardware Inventory Classes

This appendix contains information about specific hardware inventory properties and attribute classes. You will find that this information is useful for customizing your hardware inventory prior to using the Query Builder, the Resource Explorer, or Crystal Reports. SMS inventory data can be reported through the SMS Hardware Inventory Agent or through user defined MIF files.

The SMS hardware inventory classes represent inventory objects in your SMS hierarchy, such as computer systems, sound boards, CD-ROM drives, SCSI controllers, modems and printers.

The SMS_def.mof file controls the objects and properties that SMS includes in hardware inventory. You can customize the hardware inventory by editing the SMS_def.mof in the MOF Manager tool, which is described in Chapter 11, “Customizing Hardware Inventory.”

The hardware inventory classes are attribute classes of the System Resource object type described in Appendix B, “SMS Object Properties.” They are described in a separate appendix to clarify their special relationship to the SMS_def.mof.
