Locator Tools
Several locator tools are used to locate computers, directories, and files that are on the Internet. Locator tools that are included in this resource kit for use with Windows NT are displayed in the following list.
- Domain Name System (DNS), which lets the user specify user friendly computer names. DNS maps friendly computer names to numeric IP addresses. DNS servers query other DNS servers to resolve portions of the address that they cannot map, until the entire IP address has been built.
- Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), which maps the computer names of computers running Windows or Windows NT to IP addresses.
