If you cannot find the message that appears on your screen in Chapter 4, "Message Reference," check at the beginning of the list. The message may begin with a replaceable parameter. Variable names, which are placeholders for the specific word or number that appears in the message, are used as substitutes for replaceable parameters. They appear in italics in the printed book and, when a message starts with one, you will find it alphabetized separately at the beginning of the list. For example, if the book says, "Time is not a valid specification for minutes," the message that appears on your screen will contain the actual time in minutes.
The following is a list of all the variable names used in the Messages database as substitutes for replaceable parameters:
address | date | name | text |
application | drive letter | number | time |
code | file system | parameter | user name |
command | filename | path | |
computer name | group | systemroot |
