Microsoft Exchange Server employs a client-server architecture. While Microsoft Exchange Server can be installed in different configurations, a basic installation will have some components located on a Microsoft Exchange Server computer and other components located on one or more Microsoft Exchange Client computers. It may also involve server applications (including gateways) running on other computers. The following diagram illustrates the external interfaces in such an installation.
