Abstract Syntax Notation (ASN)

An ISO standard for encoding of human-readable symbols, such as header tags, into condensed binary form. ASN.1 corresponds to CCITT standards X.208 (for the notation) and X.209 (for the encoding rules). In turn, it forms part of the specifications for the X.400 and X.500 series of standards, as well as for various other specifications.

address book

A subset of the directory that includes mailboxes, custom recipients, distribution lists (DLs), and public folders. Users can access information about the organization from the address book just as they would from a printed directory. The address book can contain one or more address lists. See also global address list, personal address book.

address entry template

A component of an Addr-Type object. The address entry template consists of the controls for a dialog box that administrators can use to enter custom addresses. It provides a friendly interface for creating custom recipients for a foreign system. It is represented by the Address-Template directory object.

address space

The address information that identifies the type of messages handled by a connector or gateway. Address spaces are typically subsets of complete addresses; they contain only the elements needed to identify the route that a message should take.

Addr-Type object

An object associated with a gateway that is used to convert the address format of the foreign system to its representation in the Microsoft Exchange Server system. Components of the Addr-Type object are the proxy generation DLL, the address entry template, per-message and per-recipient options, and online Help.

Administration Management Domain (ADMD)

An X.400 term describing a message transfer system. ADMDs are usually large public carriers such as AT&T and MCI.

Administrator extension DLL

See extension DLL.

Administrator program

A graphical user interface that enables system administrators to manage and configure all Microsoft Exchange Server objects, including organizations, sites, and computers.

alias

A name or label used as an alternative way to address e-mail to a user’s mailbox. An alias is typically a shortened version of the mailbox owner’s name. For example, “jrdoe” might be the alias for John R. Doe.

attachment

A MAPI object that contains additional data, such as a file or OLE object, associated with a message.

attribute

A piece of data that stores information that is specific to an object. A set of attributes store the data that define an object. An attribute of a MAPI object is called a property.
