The UUENCODE Attachment Format

[This is preliminary documentation and subject to change.]

The Unix–to–Unix encode (UUENCODE) attachment format provided one of the earliest ways to add an attachment to a message. The attachment was appended to the United StatesAmerican Standard Code for Information Interchange (US-ASCII) body text using the UUENCODE encoding process. Each attachment was prefixed with an introduction that listed the file name and the encoding end string. Multiple attachments were individually appended in sequence and separated by a blank line. In the UUENCODE attachment format, the message body consists of two parts the text and the zip attachment.

The following code example illustrates a message body part consisting of text and the zip attachment:

To: "Some One" <someone@yourcompany>.com>
From: "Another" <another@yourcomany.com>
