The Aircraft Container, On-Disk Structure

The Aircraft folder represents the top level of aircraft-file containment within Flight Simulator 98. The Aircraft folder contains all the rest of the folders and files included in an aircraft container. The Aircraft folder contains the folders that represent an aircraft; for example, the C182 folder and the Lear45 folder are aircraft containers. In an aircraft container, you'll find the components that specify the visual model, the instrument panel, sounds, textures, force feedback parameters, the simulation model, and flight checklists. In each of these folders, you'll find the .cfg files that contain aircraft attributes. For example, the Panel folder contains the Panel.cfg file. The folders contain other types of files as well. For example, the Sound folder contains a collection of .wav files as well as the Sound.cfg file. The overall structure of the Aircraft folder is shown in the following graphic.

The structure of an aircraft container ensures that aircraft-related files are organized, rather than spread out in a random way. This logical and consistent organization makes the files easy for you to customize. The following graphic shows how all aircraft-related files are found in a logical locale and are close together. Notice how the aircraft container shown in the graphic, C182, contains the model, panel, sound, and texture folders, as well as all the files that define aircraft-related attributes. This graphic shows, in detail, the contents of the Sound folder, the Sound.cfg file and .wav files that determine the aircraft's sounds.
