HTML Help 1.21 includes many features that enable help
authors to create dynamic help systems and Web sites. These features
include:
- An ActiveX® control that provides navigation
features, such as a table of contents, index, and related topics.
- A full set of authoring tools, including HTML Help
Workshop, the help file compiler, and the Flash image editing
application.
- The HTML Help Viewer for displaying help files.
- A Java Applet that gives authors the ability to use
basic navigation controls in Web browsers that support Java but not ActiveX.
- Advanced full-text search, Associative links
(ALinks), and Keyword links (KLinks) in compiled help files.
- A full-text search stop list, which makes searches
faster and more efficient.
- A Favorites tab that enables users to save a list of
topics they use most often.
In addition HTML Help provides authors with the ability to:
- Automatically generate an index that merges keyword
entries in a topic with an index file.
- Merge multiple compiled help (.chm)
files into one file at run-time, including table of contents (.hhc) and
index (.hhk) files.
- Download compiled help files from a Web site.
- Create context-sensitive help for
software applications using the HTML Help ActiveX control.
- Take advantage of Web-based technologies such as cascading style sheets, scripting,
and the Document Object Model.
- Create pop-up windows to display items such as tool tips or definitions
for glossary terms.
