Internet Explorer May Fail on LAN Manager/Windows 3.1 Clients

ID: Q151630

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.5, 3.51
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 1.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Microsoft Windows 3.1x plus LAN Manager 2.2c (w/ TCPIP Utility 1.0)

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer (IE) version 2.0 can be installed on Windows 3.1 client with LAN Manager version 2.2c plus TCP/IP Utility IP Stack and Sockets.dll dialer. However, it fails to resolve hosts names to IP addresses via DNS/DNR. The numeric IP address on the URL works fine.

The \Lanman.dos\Etc\Hosts file can be used and works for host name resolution.

NOTE: Both DNS/DNR and socket are activated in LAN Manager.

CAUSE

RESOLUTION

Use the numeric IP address instead of the HostName in the URL; for example, http://198.105.232.5 instead of http://www.microsoft.com or use HOSTS file.
