Using Universal Naming Convention Connections

ID: Q184310

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

When you are creating virtual directories in Internet Information Server, you can use universal naming convention (UNC) connections.

MORE INFORMATION

To use UNC connections, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Internet Service Manager.

  2. Open the Properties page of the World Wide Web service.

  3. Select the Directories tab.

  4. Click the Add button.

  5. In the Directory box, type the UNC you want to use in the format \\<servername>\<share>.

  6. After you type the UNC, the Account section of the dialog box becomes available.

  7. Enter a user name (and password) for a user who has the desired access level to the particular share.

  8. Close the dialog box.

WARNING!

The user name and password entered will always have access to the UNC share. It is not possible to restrict access to that share. Anyone who can access the virtual directory can access the UNC, regardless of the specific permissions on the directory. This behavior is by design.
