How to Use the IIS Security "What If" Tool

SUMMARY

The purpose of this article is to explain how to install, use, and uninstall the IIS Security "What If" tool. The IIS Security "What If" tool is a Dynamic HTML (DHTML) utility designed to assist in troubleshooting security issues with IIS.

NOTE: This utility requires a DHTML-enabled browser and has been tested with Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and 5.0. While it should work with most DHTML-enabled browsers, Microsoft cannot guarantee compatibility with third-party Web browsers. As such, this article has been written specifically for use with Internet Explorer.

Installing the Utility

1. Download the utility to your desktop.



2. Double-click the Iisperms.exe file.



3. Click Yes to install the files.



4. Click Yes if you agree with the End-User License Agreement.



5. Specify a directory to extract the files to.



6. Click OK when the installation is complete.

Using the Utility

1. Locate the folder that you specified during the installation using Windows Explorer.



2. Double-click the Iis_permissions.htm file.



3. When the page opens in Internet Explorer, choose the following options:
   
   

   Column	Description
   Browser	The Web browser that a client uses to browse an IIS site
   Client OS	The operating system that the client Web browser is running on
   Scenario	The client is browsing across the Internet or is located on an intranet with IIS
   Web Server	The IIS and operating system versions being used on the server
   Web Auth Scheme	The type of authentication being used in this deployment




4. After choosing the above options, click the Check button and the graphics display will be updated to show which computers and resources the client will be able to reach based on the conditions specified.

Uninstalling the Utility

1. Locate the folder that you specified during the installation using Windows Explorer.



2. Delete all of the following files:
   
   
   • Arrowright.gif
   • Arrowup.gif
   • Browser.gif
   • Iis_banr.gif
   • Iis_permissions.htm
   • Iisserver.gif
   • IisserverNo.gif
   • Remotefile.gif
   • Remotefileno.gif
   • Rightarrow.gif
